Club FFRUK at Rooz Studios

 

There is something that happens in a small room that simply cannot happen in a large venue.

 

The distance disappears.

 

There is no great divide between artist and audience. No sea of phones between you and the stage. No backstage mythology. You can see the whites of somebody's eyes. You can hear the amp before it comes through the PA. Someone starts a chorus and suddenly the whole room is part of it.

 

That is what we love about Club FFRUK at Rooz Studios.

 

Once a month, Tara Rez of The Duel and Segs Jennings of The Ruts / Ruts DC host a night bringing together musicians from different generations of punk, alternative and independent music.

 

But Rooz is not really a traditional gig venue.

 

It is a working rehearsal studio.

 

For FFRUK, one of those rehearsal rooms becomes the club.

 

A stage goes in. The bar is open. The bands arrive. The audience piles into the same room.

 

And suddenly it feels less like attending a concert and more like you've somehow been invited into the rehearsal.

 

That closeness is important to us.

 

Some of London's most loved music spaces were never huge. Places like the old 12 Bar Club on Denmark Street became legendary because artists and audiences were practically on top of one another.

 

You weren't observing music from a safe distance.

 

You were inside it.

 

FFRUK isn't trying to recreate the 12 Bar or recreate another era.

 

Punk doesn't need another museum.

 

What interests us is taking that spirit — independence, community, experimentation, lack of barriers — and carrying it forward.

 

Hence the name:

 

FULL FUTURE.

 

The people who helped create the culture are still here. New artists are arriving. Younger audiences are discovering music that happened long before they were born while bringing their own ideas, sounds and energy with them.

 

Put everybody in the same little room and something interesting happens.

 

On Saturday 12 September, Club FFRUK returns with a line-up that illustrates exactly that idea.

 

Hosting the night are Segs Jennings, whose history with The Ruts and Ruts DC places him at the heart of British punk, and Tara Rez, singer and songwriter with long-running London punk/electronic band The Duel.

 

This month's featured live bill is headed by Chaos UK, one of the defining names of the UK82 generation, alongside Dogshite and Daddy Those Men Scare Me.

 

There will be live sets, DJs, friends, musicians, people who were there the first time around and people who weren't even born yet.

 

Good.

 

That's exactly how it should be.

 

Because underground culture only stays alive if it keeps moving.

 

Not nostalgia.

 

Not reverence.

 

Transmission.

 

One generation hands something to the next, the next generation changes it, and the story carries on.

 

And sometimes all that needs is a rehearsal room, a bar, some amplifiers and enough people willing to make a noise.
